Ontario Brain Injury Association

I’ve experienced repeated neglect and dismissive treatment from the Ontario Brain Injury Association. My calls were ignored or ended abruptly, and I was even blocked on social media when I tried to seek help. Instead of offering support or understanding, staff often punished me for my reactions rather than addressing the behavior that caused them. Many of us living with brain injuries don’t have the luxury of someone always at our side to advocate or negotiate on our behalf. We’re often managing things alone — exhausted, struggling, and doing our best to communicate while processing complex situations. Our reactions may sometimes come across as frustration or anger, but that’s part of living with a brain injury. Instead of showing patience or accountability, staff have chosen to close files rather than acknowledge their own questionable comments and behavior. It’s deeply disappointing to be treated this way by an organization that’s meant to support people in vulnerable situations. ***Response to the owner's reply (Nov 6, 2025)***: Thank you for replying. However, I want to clarify that no genuine resolution or acknowledgment has ever been provided. Around September, I submitted a detailed formal letter outlining specific concerns about broken communication, avoidance, and the emotional impact of being repeatedly dismissed. That letter was sent multiple times to several OBIA staff and has still not received a response. Instead, my efforts to follow up have been met with accusations of hostility and threats to close my file — simply for asking for accountability and clarity. Earlier in the summer, I was offered assistance with certain matters, but when I tried to continue that conversation, communication abruptly stopped without explanation. When I expressed how this mirrored past traumatic experiences with other organizations, I was referred to a crisis line instead of having the underlying issue addressed. I’m sharing this not to be combative, but to be transparent. I still believe in what OBIA stands for — compassion, advocacy, and understanding for those living with brain injury. Unfortunately, the way this situation has been handled does not reflect those values. I hope this feedback encourages reflection within the organization and leads to more trauma-informed, accountable practices in the future.
